Patient Belongings and Valuables Management
Our research has determined that Hospitals were spending an excessive amount of money in the mitigation of lost Patient Belongings and Valuables. This research suggested that an average sized Community Hospital could spend a 6-figure amount annually on expenditures associated with lost belongings.
It is difficult for a Hospital to predict or budget with any degree of certainty or accuracy the amount of money that will be needed to mitigate concerns related to lost belongings and valuables due to the fluctuations in the values of lost items. One Hospital was accused by a patient of losing over $50,000 worth of jewelry. Because the costs associated with lost belongings are often not captured in one place specifically designated for such costs, some Healthcare Organizations are not aware of the costs, in the aggregate, that are being spent on lost belongings. Our Product Solutions will assist you in measuring these costs. Even more difficult to quantify is the financial impact related to lowered customer/patient satisfaction. Customers/Patients will be less likely to recommend an Organization to their friends and relatives after experiencing these types of unpleasant incidents associated with lost belongings. The recent rise in popularity of electronic devices that we travel with will only exacerbate the issues related to lost belongings. What needs to be considered with the monetary replacement value of these portable electronic devices is the value of the software that is housed on each device. In addition to the monetary value of these devices and the software on the devices, they often hold pictures and other items of sentimental value that are not easily replaced. Some items, when lost, can adversely affect the health and well being of a person (glasses, hearing aids, dentures, etc.) and create enormous replacement challenges for the customer/patient.

All Hospitals should Consider
The tasks associated with patient belongings during a patient surge or mass decontamination event. During such an event, a large number of patients will arrive at the hospital and potentially need to be washed down with soap and water, or decontaminated, to rid the Patients of the contaminant. This requires an efficient process of properly handling and securing each Patients’ belongings. The circumstance causing the patient surge or mass decontamination event may also warrant, in addition to the Patients, the Patients’ belongings be decontamination.
The process relating to...
the management of Patient belongings and valuables involves inter and intra-departmental efforts and communications. Those efforts and communications need to be aligned with the tasks at hand. This module helps ensure that alignment is in place and it works in harmony with other modules offered by H Squared Systems.
Upon careful review of the problems stated above, we began to understand how the handling of Patient belongings and valuables were integral to other processes and areas of a Healthcare organization. We began to expand our offering by developing other modules that complimented the Patient belongings and valuables module.
